Whether it was the basketball after school, track and field or football, being active has been a way of life. During my later years in high school I began to focus just on football. Along with this focus came increased attention to weight training. After 5 years of rigorous weight training I thought I was "strong". Then one day just for a laugh I tried a yoga video. After 5 minutes in down dog my arms began to shake. Then I realized I could barely touch my toes. After considering myself to be fit, this was quite a blow to my ego. Then I heard a famous yogi say "the definition of power is being able to use the full strength of your muscles in a full range of motion." According to this definition I was not powerful at all. My focus quickly shifted from just weight training to include yoga. After seven years of practice, my focus has shifted again. Now I see the link between the mind and body. While the physical benefits of yoga are fantastic, the mental clarity is now what I crave. I teach a style of yoga designed to build strength, overall flexibility, and concentration. I try to incorporate a mix of ashtanga and vinyasa yoga to leave students strong, focused, and centered in their bodies. |
